Boort Angling Club Members had the pleasure on the 30th June to host a Forum run by VFA Victorian
fisheries Authority , the main purpose is to engage and inform organisations and general public of there
commitment and enforcement of future recreational fisheries for people to enjoy in years to come
Fish restocking and fishing rules where there tools to ensure this , with education and information shared
through these forums for us ( fishos ) to engage present where , Mid Northern Association of Angling
Clubs ( Charlton, St Arnaud, Donald, Quambatook, Lake Boga and Birchip and Boort ), VFA , Victorian
Fishing Authority, North Central Catchment Management Authority ,VRFiSH others.
Due to COVID restrictions unfortunately there was limited access to the event
This is the first of a series of fourteen meetings of this nature to be held throughout Victoria. The aim is
getting people to ( network) from different organisations together to discuss problems, achievements, and
possible solutions. Exchanges of ideas and opinions happened before, during and after the meeting.
Covering recreational fishing right through to general environment issues. This knowledge sharing should
and will continue.
Presentations from the department people were brief, informative, and thought provoking.
Some items discussed, include
*Possible works to improve fish migration along Loddon River and other streams.
*Possible installation of fish habitat in Little Lake Boort in a way that would not affect other lake users.
*Co-operation between VFA, GMW, Recreational Fishers, and others re transfer of fish to safe water,
prior to GMW channel maintenance or other programs.
*Detailed reports on fish kills verses those saved and possibility of achieving better results.
*Possibility of chips or tags for relocated fish to ascertain long term benefits or otherwise.
*Local Angling Clubs need to be contacted prior to restocking events, to empower clubs to engage at roots
level ( hands on grab a bucket or 2 of fishlings and transport them to a safe location in there local water
ways , talk to locals for the best location to release fish at a place and time for best survival rates. VFA is
committed to this.
